Who Causes The Most Stress for Each Nation in 2022?
As we start the new year, we’d like to reflect on 2022 and its major events. Last year, there were quite a few stress-inducing events, as well as outstanding individuals. From the Ukraine war to the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard trial, each significant event in 2022 caused a varying amount of stress in people worldwide.
Some countries were more affected by specific events than others. The same applies to the stressor, who may have more influence in certain countries or industries. Using TensiStrength, a stress/relaxation strength analysis tool developed by Mike Thelwall – Professor of IT at Wolverhampton University, we compiled a list of who causes the most stress for each nation in 2022.
So, who are the world’s top stressors in 2022? Which countries are the most stressful? Who is each nation’s primary source of stress in 2022? Let’s find out.

The World’s Top 10 Stressors in 2022
*What is “Stress Point”? How is it calculated? Please find the answer in our Methodology at the end.
The Russia-Ukraine war has been stressing out the whole world. It’s why Russian president, Vladimir Putin, is the person causing the most stress to the world in 2022. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, also make it to the top 10 world stressors.
Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is a rising artist who became the world’s biggest pop star in 2022. His fast-track career makes him the second person in the world to cause the most stress in 2022.
Riverdale actor Ryan Grantham was sentenced to life with parole for the second-degree murder of his mother in 2020. Also, Amber Heard faced defamation charges against her ex-husband Johnny Depp, while American rapper Young Thug was arrested over gang-related charges in 2022. The legal implications make Ryan, Amber, and Young Thug among the top 10 world stressors in 2022.
Sadly, Ivana Trump, former US president Donald Trump’s wife, passed away in July 2022, as did Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. It made Ivana and the Queen among the top 10 world stressors last year.
For Jeffrey Dahmer, the “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” Netflix series based on his life was the number one watched series for weeks and is the fourth most-viewed series of all time. As a result, Jeffrey Dahmer makes it to one of the top 10 most stressful people in the world.
Each Country’s Primary Stressor in 2022
Top 10 Stressful Countries of 2022
To find the most stressful nations, we combined the stress point of all tweets with the location of that country.
Who Causes the Most Stress to Each U.S. State in 2022?
Stress Agents Break Down by Field (Politics, Entertainment, Sports, Business/Finance, Crime)
We break down the individuals on the seed list into five categories based on their profession: Politics, Entertainment, Sports, Business/Finance, and Crime. Here are the lists of the most stressful individuals in each field:
Methodology and Limitations
First, we compiled a list of influential people in 2022 by analyzing Google Trends for significant events and their related human factors (e.g: the Ukraine war – Vladimir Putin). The seed list includes 169 individuals.
Second, we scraped all 2022 tweets that mentioned the individuals on the seed list.
Third, we used a tool called TensiStrength (developed by Mike Thelwall – Professor of IT at Wolverhampton University) to assess the stress/ relaxation levels of each tweet. The stress level ranges from -5 to -1, with -5 being the highest. The level of relaxation ranges from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest.
Then, we assigned a “stress point” to each person, where stress point = stress level of all tweets mentioning this person + relaxation level of all tweets mentioning this person. For example, three tweets mention Emma; the first has a stress level of -1, the second has a stress level of -3, and the third has a relaxation level of +3 -> Stress Point = -1 -3 +3 = -1
Finally, we analyzed this data by country to determine the main stressor of each nation. The same method is applied to determine the main stressor of each U.S. state.
Notes:
- Missing data is removed from the final data set.
- Geographical location is determined by the original location of the tweet.
- The date is determined by the timestamp at which the tweets are posted.
- Over 1,180,000 Tweets have been collected for analysis. Missing data causes records to be excluded, leaving over 960,000 for analysis.
